Prinsengracht’s Verdant Whisper

Nestled in the elegant and historic Prinsengracht in the heart of Amsterdam, this garden was designed to create a peaceful retreat, featuring a meandering path that winds between lush planting beds and leads to a tranquil terrace at the rear. The terrace offers a perfect spot for outdoor dining or working, a refreshing way to support mental well-being by staying connected to nature.
The path is laid with natural slate chippings, while the terrace is finished with classic blue stone, bringing a refined and timeless feel to the space.

Although the garden benefits from soft morning light, the surrounding tall buildings create a predominantly shaded environment. The planting scheme was thoughtfully composed to thrive in these conditions, with a rich mix of evergreen ferns, hydrangeas, Brunnera, Kirengeshoma palmata, and a structural matrix of ornamental grasses such as Sesleria autumnalis ‘Greenlee Hybrid’ and Luzula nivea.

A timber fence encloses the space, softened with evergreen jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), which provides a lush green backdrop throughout the year and fills the summer air with the sweet fragrance of its white flowers.

Seasonal interest has been carefully considered throughout the year. Multi-stem Amelanchier trees bring privacy and beauty, with delicate white blossoms in spring and striking autumn foliage. To ensure year-round sensory appeal, the garden also features winter- and early spring-scented plants such as Edgeworthia chrysantha, Sarcococca confusa, and Daphne odora, which add fragrance and subtle colour during the quieter months.
