Contemporary Tsuboniwa Retreat — Calm, Seasonal, Serene

Designed in response to a brief for a Japanese-inspired garden, this space balances structure and softness to create a deeply calming atmosphere. A flowering cherry anchors the space, supported by two Amelanchier lamarckii and two Osmanthus burkwoodii, bringing layered seasonal interest and delicate shifts in light and texture.

Four water bowls, three within the garden and one in the courtyard, introduce a quiet rhythm of sound and reflection. Limestone stackers define edges and transitions, complementing the slate ground plane and reinforcing a sense of restraint and clarity.

Understated lighting with discreet uplights beneath the trees extends the experience into the evening, revealing form and shadow with subtle drama.

A compact urban space, shaped into a place of pause.
